You may be concerned about how braces or other orthodontic appliances will affect your appearance during treatment. But rest assured that orthodontic appliances are much less noticeable than they were 50 years ago. Braces brackets are now smaller and come in both metal and clear ceramic material. Clear plastic aligner trays such as Invisalign are also another discreet orthodontic option.

The length of orthodontic treatment is a significant consideration for many individuals, as they want to have an estimate of how long they will need to wear braces or undergo orthodontic procedures. For minor orthodontic treatment you can expect to be in your orthodontic appliance for around 6 months. More complex movements such as correcting severe crowding can take around 18 to 24 months.

The financial aspect of orthodontic treatment is often a concern. Patients often have questions about the cost of braces, clear aligners, retainers, and any additional procedures that may be required. That’s why we provide a clear orthodontic cost guide here and include all of your orthodontic visits, appliances and initial retainers in your comprehensive quote.

Some orthodontic patients worry about potential pain or discomfort associated with orthodontic appliances, such as soreness or sensitivity after orthodontic adjustments or the placement of braces. Some patients feel very little discomfort but for those who do feel some tenderness after their appointment, this discomfort can be easily managed with over the counter pain relief.

Whilst maintaining proper oral hygiene can be more challenging with braces or orthodontic appliances in general with the right brushing and flossing techniques and a little extra effort, it is still possible to effectively clean your teeth and maintain good oral health throughout orthodontic treatment. At Gentle Touch Orthodontics, our dental professionals will give you all the support and instruction you need to help you reduce the risk of developing tooth decay or gum problems.

You may have certain dietary restrictions while wearing braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign. Trying to avoid sticky or hard foods, may be necessary during orthodontic treatment to prevent damage to braces or orthodontic appliances. However, it’s important to note that you can still enjoy sweets and treats in moderation by making smart choices and being mindful of your orthodontic appliances. Opting for softer alternatives or cutting sticky foods into smaller, manageable pieces can help satisfy your cravings without compromising your braces or slowing your orthodontic treatment progress.

It’s completely understandable that you may have concerns about how braces or clear aligners could potentially impact your speech. While it’s true that you may experience some adjustments initially, any changes to your speech are usually temporary and your ability to speak clearly will adapt over time as you get used to the appliance. The mouth and tongue simply need a brief period to adjust to the presence of braces or clear aligners. Rest assured that our orthodontic team are experienced in ensuring that any speech alterations are minimal and temporary, and they will work closely with you to address any concerns and provide guidance throughout the treatment process. With a little patience and practice, you’ll find that your speech will return to normal as you become accustomed to your orthodontic device…oh and we always recommend singing in the shower!

Following orthodontic treatment, it is important to allow your teeth, gums, and bone to stabilise. The duration of retainer wear will depend on your unique biology, and our orthodontist will provide recommendations tailored to your needs. Typically, full-time retainer wear is initially required after completing orthodontic treatment, with a transition to night-time wear after 3 to 6 months. As our bodies naturally change over time, it is advisable to continue wearing a night-time orthodontic retainer indefinitely, regardless of whether you received orthodontic treatment or not. At Gentle Touch Orthodontics, your initial retainer is included in your treatment and can last up to 5 years. If replacement retainers are needed, they can be provided for a small fee.
